An excerpt from Sanctuary of Nine Dragons: Book  Three:

A dark figure holding an infant materialized in the ghostly woods. The babe in his arms squirmed but didn’t cry. How anyone could do this to an infant he didn’t know, but he had his orders, supposedly right from the King of Mahorg. Kill the infant and leave the body in the forest, where wild animals could find it and destroy the remains. He couldn’t bring himself to kill such an innocent. What evil could this one do?

Maybe he’d leave him here. There was a small depression in which he could lay him and they are close enough to the road that someone would surely find him.

He put the baby under the tree and covered him with some leaves. “There little one, that should protect you until someone comes along.” After he was sure the child was comfortable he placed his hand on the child’s forehead and chanted a few words. A golden glow settled around the infant as his features changed ever so imperceptibly, so that no one would recognize him as Prince Airyn.

The figure backed away seeming to melt into the forest and with a puff of smoke vanished. A hungry tigre wandered by as the child began to fuss. The creature sniffed around the wriggling infant. He batted it with a large paw. The child whimpered but did not cry out as the animal rooted through the leaves.

Molly and Lukan rode home after an evening in the village of Jena. It was a small military outpost on the border of Crato and Mahorg and Lukan had agreed to captain the outpost after his return from Hyogo Prison. They just found out that Molly, after many years of trying, was finally with child and celebrated the news at the Dragons Heart Inn.

“Lukan, I wish we could share our news with Maeve and Joachim. It’d be wonderful if ours could grow up with the prince and princess, like you did. Are you sure we made the right decision, not going back to Wryzburg? The king did apologize. He returned your title, our home and land.”

“Molly, we’ve been over this a hundred times, we prayed about it, discussed it with Rupert and the queen. This is the best place for us. I don’t know why Asha wills the things he does, but I believe it is His will that we are here.

Lukan spied the tigre. He pushed Molly behind him and drew his sword. “I wonder what that animal is doing out here so far away from his territory.”

“Looks hungry to me.” Molly shivered. “With all the storms and fires, even the wild animals have to travel far and wide to find food. Please do something. I don’t want to be his next meal. And be careful.”

He watched the beast turn his massive head, as if to question the intruders interruption. The knight stepped toward the object of the tigres interest. The animal growled. Lukan lifted his sword and slowly circled so as not to startle the animal into making any fatal moves.

The deadly ballet continued for what seemed like an eternity as Lukan sized up the situation.

The animal leaped. Lukan stepped aside to get out of its path. The creature’s lethal claws raked across his thigh. The knight took a deep breath as he winced in pain. The wolf prepared to spring again. Molly screamed and ran toward her husband. Lukan held up his hand to signal her to stay back.

He returned his concentration to the tigre. The large beast pounced knocking the knight to the ground. It pawed Lukan’s face as he tried to push it off. The tigre opened his cavernous mouth to bite. Lukan could smell blood and death on its breath. He heard Molly scream again. She seemed far away. A hush settled over the glade and all Lukan heard was the panting of the tigre and his own heart beat as he saw scenes of his life scroll through his mind. This couldn’t be happening, not now when things were so good. He had a wife, a child on the way. They had a home, a good life. He looked away from the obsidian cavern in front of him and to the heavens before he closed his eyes. “Asha forgive me, but if this is your will, then be there for my wife and child that they may not know pain and despair.”

The wail of a small child erupted from the glingkol tree. The tigre froze. In the animals moment of inattention Lukan grabbed his dagger and plunged it into the beast’s muscular chest. It toppled over landing beside Lukan with its large paws resting on his chest. He slithered out from under the beast and then rolled on his side and stabbed it one more time to ensure it was dead.

The soldier crawled to the tree and dropped his knife and pushed the leaves out of the way. “Molly, come over here!”

“Forget about that. Look at your leg. It’s covered in blood.” She reached out with her shawl to wipe away the blood.

He pushed her hand away. “I’m fine. Leave it be and look at this.” He lifted a bundle out of the leaves.

She kneeled beside him. “But Lukan, your face, your  bleed… A baby! Oh my! The tigre, he almost ate it. If we hadn’t come along… but, who would leave a wee one out here. Lukan we have to do something. We have to find out where he’s from…it is a boy isn’t it?”

“Molly slow down. Here take him. Let me see if there is anything or anyone else around.” Molly stood first and then took the child so Lukan could stand.

She used a free hand to search through the blanket and check the child. “I didn’t see anyone on the road. Where do you s’pose he came from?”

Lukan walked around the tigre and looked as best he could in the darkness for any sign of who might have left the child. There was none to be seen. “Hard to tell anything in this fog. We best head home and I can check things out in the morning.”

“Wait, what of your leg. At least let me wrap it in my shawl.”

He sat under the tree. Molly handed him the infant, wrapped his leg and wiped the scratches on his face. “There that should hold till we get home.” Before taking the infant back she found a long branch that Lukan could lean on then together the soldier, his wife and abandoned infant walked home.
