Prompt: What are your top ten favorite dragon books- what makes them good?

Todays prompt took a little research. I had to go back through the books I read and try to pick the top ten. Like yesterday’s tea party that was a daunting task. I have read so many good books that it was hard to narrow it down to ten. So the first thing I did is divide the books into categories: Books where dragons are either the main characters or interact with the main characters on an extreme level. The other category was books with dragons in them.

Then I decided to go with the first category and still there were too many to list, so here is a partial list of my favorite dragon books. Some of these books are part of a series so I have listed the author first and then the series, because in most cases I was enamored with the entire series.

So why do I like these books? The first and most obvious is that they contain dragons that have an active role in the story. The stories are not just about the humans but also the dragons. Whether they transform into dragons or are dragons all along, they speak to people, they are part of the action, more so than say a horse or a dog. I grant you that sometimes our pets are closer to us than the people in our lives, but these dragons for the most part are more than pets, and sometimes more human than some of the humans in the stories.

Some of the books, like those of Bryan Davis and Donita K. Paul have a faith theme to them, sometimes it is an obvious belief in God and in other cases there is an underlying current of a belief in a higher power.

Others like Naomi Novik are historical fantasies, where she takes a period in history and looks at it from a different perspective, and says what if there had been dragons in this time period.

Others are just really fun reads that draw me in slowly and then hold me there until I finish the series. I find myself buying the next book as soon as I finish one. The story is engrossing and the characters well rounded and filled out. They become a part of my family and I am loathe to be parted from them at the end of the series. Sometimes I have to take a break for a few days and let them slowly exit my life. All the authors and so many others that I didn’t mention either because they didn’t have dragons in their books, or their dragons didn’t play such a prominent role write a good story and I often can’t wait to get my hands on their next book whether it be part of the series or a whole new world for me to glide into.

They have created worlds  and characters for me to escape too, to leave the confines of life and soar to new heights, new worlds. They inspire me to do the same when I write my own books and show me the way to do it.
